History of the catamaran


Our vessel is not a new design: it was the maxi catamaran „Gemini 3“, previously „Bioton“ – built in 2007 at the Swedish yard Marstrom Composite under the direction of Captain Roman Paszke.

Both hulls are made of carbon pre-preg with a Nomex core. The moulds were produced on a 5-axis CNC mill and laminated in a vacuum autoclave. This construction is the reason the platform can be converted and extended today instead of being scrapped.

Records and circumnavigations


Under the command of Roman Paszke, the „Gemini 3“ sailed some of the toughest routes in the world. The Polish racing sailor and yacht designer brings more than 40 years of offshore experience: multiple Polish champion, competitor in international regattas and solo Atlantic sailor from Cádiz to New York.

Between 2001 and 2013 he repeatedly set course for a circumnavigation against the prevailing wind direction – the most demanding route there is. Two attempts ended early, one of them after three weeks off Cape Horn. What remains is a course record the vessel still holds today.

2001

„The Race“ – fourth place

As initiator of the Polish Race 2000 programme, Paszke commands the yacht Warta-Polpharma in the round-the-world race „The Race“: 32,000 nautical miles in 99 days. Sailed nonstop – no port calls, no outside assistance. The result is fourth place.

2007

First attempt with the „Bioton“

With the newly completed vessel, Paszke plans a solo circumnavigation from east to west – against wind and current. This direction is considered far harder and is rarely attempted at all. Adverse weather prevents the start.

2011/12

Departure and forced stop in Argentina

In December 2011 Paszke sets off east–west again. A breakdown in January 2012 leads to the „Gemini 3“ being detained in Argentina – until the legal dispute is settled in mid-June. The vessel is held for almost half a year; the attempt fails before the hardest legs even begin.

2013

Solo, nonstop, against the wind

A first start on 27 December 2012 from Las Palmas ends after just six hours with a rudder failure. On 7 January Paszke sets off again, this time from Gran Canaria, aiming to circle the globe via Cape Horn in under 122 days. After three weeks at sea he aborts: the iceberg situation in the southern oceans makes navigation impossible to calculate.

Świnoujście – Gdynia in 8:55:50

On 25 October the „Gemini 3“ beats its own course record by more than four hours – averaging over 21 knots, peaking at 34. The previous best time was 13 hours, 7 minutes and 40 seconds and belonged to the same vessel. What is being converted today is a demonstrably fast boat.

At 29.9 metres long and 14.06 metres wide, the catamaran offers generous space on board – and a broad, stable base for fast sailing. Propulsion is electric, supplied by 20 kWp of solar and 330 kWh of propulsion batteries.
